This seems to have stopped working. Using the REST api it just says everyone is an invalid gamertag. This is a great service and it would be a shame if it wasn't saved : )

After about a day of trying to understand all this. I think I have a pretty good solution to simply displaying your Gamertag status. I have been searching for a way to accomplish this for such a long time. I'm so glad you have shown us the light Duncan!

can someone help me recover my gamertag on xbox live, like everytime i try to recovr it, it says something about "There is a problem with the credentials" then when i do go to passport.com AND try to sign in it says something like "you are signing into this to much or someone else is"

I started developing my own Xbox 360 website back in February and had hoped by now, Microsoft would either accept or deny my request. I've heard that Microsoft has been very slow in responding or not responding at all from other web developers. I am with the others on here though, why can't they open the program to everyone else? I know Playstation 3's PSN doesn't have anything to compare to Xbox 360's XBL web feed, so maybe Microsoft is just holding back from us. ;)

Oh and before I forget.. Is there any chance you could pull some strings over at Microsoft in order for them to take a look at my request? I am one of those few who are creating a large site. :)

I use this ColdFusion code to cache the xml file on my server. I then setup my server to automatically run this script every 30 minutes. I then have another page that actually uses the local xml file.

Hey Patrick, Alex... and everyone else... while I understand your comments that it should be more widely available, that is exactly why I made this service on my site. I understand that you would rather be hitting a service on xbox.com or something similar, but I do strive for high uptime and few breaking changes... and I am a Microsoft employee by the way, so we aren't all in favour of restricting access to this data :)

Yeah, I have to agree with Alex. It doesn't make sense for Microsoft to restrict access to that data. I'm afraid to lean on your service because it may come down, or change, or who knows what.

It would be great if they could open it at least a little bit. Like to members of XNA~

I use CURL to first cache the xml file on my own server then simplexml to access the xml file and process it into the PHP script.

the easiest way to use the info is to use a xml parser and then use the info as you wish

Duncan, great post and info. I've been trying for a while to find something like this!

One problem I have though...? I have consumed your webservice in VS2005 and I am trying to get back data for my GTag, but, I keep getting error: Data source is an invalid type. It must be either an IListSource, IEnumerable, or IDataSource.

I'd prefer to use the web service rather than a get method as it's cleaner. Any help greatly appriciated. Ta.

Love this service. Ditto what everyone has already said, its great! - thanks for making it available. Question though..anyone know why some output for some gamertags show <LastSeen>0001-01-01T00:00:00</LastSeen> and offline, even though I can see they are really on if I go into xbox.com? Are their profiles corrupt or something?

superb service i made a little friends list for my clan so we can see whos on and whos playing what

wouldnt be possible without your nice service

now i wanna work out how people can see when players unlock achievements and report it so i can get it to make a "10 recent achievement list"

This service is great! I've cooked up a nice little mod for Invision Power Board 2.3.x. It fits right into the user profile page for a nice list of games played, achievements and online status. It wouldn't be possible without your link to XBL. Thanks!

This service is great - though it's a shame that MS has decided to limit who has access to the APIs for Xbox Live.

Any chance that the server you connect to has the ability to get achievement info for a specified Gamertag? I've already written a small script to update Twitter with my Live status, but I'd also like to build something that can update based on Achievements that I earn.

Awesome work! but like many here I'm VERY interested in how you did that webservice.

I run a community site for Xbox users in Iceland and I'm working on a custom list of all the players here, what they are playing etc.

Since I dont want to hammer your webservice with ~600 calls every 30-60 minutes every day, can you give any inforomation on how you wrote that webservice?

I applied to the Xbox Community Developer program, but never got a reply :(

Sucks that Microsoft are restricting who can and cannot access this information.

Thanks a ton for your work. I just hope Microsoft considers that it comes under their stipulations for using the service.

Its a shame as if Microsoft supported us directly we could have a way to authenticate and retrieve our friends list. Would a cool thing to have on my private homepage.

Does this application work on vista? I have it installed, but It never seems to send my currently playing information to twitter. On another note I would love a web service for this :) I would use the wonderful API you provide, but I can only run cron jobs every hour on my current host, which wouldn't be enough to catch events and status on xbox live. Keep up the great work!

Does this only show when you're playing a game, or can it display your achievements? I'd love to automatically post my achievements to Twitter. Not sure I want to post everytime I pop in a game, though I totally see how that could be worthwhile.

If you have some restrictions to give for using your webservice... because I'm afraid that in time... I'll will consume it more and more :)

Everyone should really uninstall and reinstall, the latest version addresses the known issues list around too frequent updates and also adds a 'don't show popups' option for those commenters who wanted it...

I love it! My only request echo's #9. I would love if I had the option to prevent the popup status. Especially if you have the taks bar set to autohide, it causes the taskbar to popup and stay up until it goes away.
Other than that, it's a nice utility.

Sorry for the additional comment, but I felt it worth asking. Would it be possible to add a setting to disable the messages in the corner? It's just kinda distracting to have it pop up sometimes. Shouldn't be too hard. =)
